jan 1, 1807 - Cotton Gin Patent is Validated
Description:
The invention of the Cotton Gin, attributed to Eli Whitney, greatly benefited cotton planters, as it made it much less labor intensive to process the cotton. Cotton planters could now make a lot of money off of a very cheap crop. However, it was very significant culturally because it lead to an increase in slavery in the south. Since cotton farming was so cheap, plantation owners needed a lot of laborers, and slave labor was the cheapest at that time.
