jan 1, 1821 - Lowell Factories open

Description:

The Lowell factories were textile mills in Massachusetts. These were unique to their time period because they not only had every step to manufacturing done under one roof, but also hired young women, instead of men or children. These factories were culturally significant because they chose to hire mostly young women in their factories. They were paid the highest in the world at the time for women ($2.50 per week), but were still paid less for their work than men would be.
