The slave trade's ending was a devastating blow to those states whose economies were entirely dependent on slave labor. It made it more difficult to acquire new slaves, and so more difficult to acquire their labor force.
This was important, as it led to a society that enforced the trade and reselling of slaves, as well as their children.
