Description:

Somewhere during the reign of Herod Antipas, John the baptizer led a mission of preaching forgiveness through baptism and an imminent judgment. He was executed by Herod either (a) because Antipas feared John's influence might lead people to sedition (Josephus, Ant. 18.118-19) or (b) because John denounced Herod's marraige to his brother's wife (Matt 13:4-6; Mark 6:17-18). The two motivations are not necessarily mutually exclusive.
