Description:

The Gestapo was the state secret police under the control of Hitler. They were used to spy on everyone.
Additionally, they had a network of informers across Germany who spied on their own neighbours and friends and would support any suspicious activity to the Gestapo.
Despite there actually being very few Gestapo men in largely populated areas, they still spread fear amongst the people. Anyone could be an informant so people were under the impression that they were always being watched so would conform to the regime.
