On the night of the 29th of June 1934, Hitler had hundreds of SA leaders and senior men arrested and shot. He was worried about the growing independence of Röhm, the leader of the SA. He also wanted the army on the side who were also concerned about the SA.
The SS carried out the arrests and executions.
Hitler gained the support of the Elites and army who had previously hated him. People were frightened by this and far less likely to speak out against the Nazi party.
