feb 8, 1889 - The Dawes Act

Description:

The Dawes Act was an act passed by the US Government which allowed for Indian reservations to be divided up into small tracts which could be given to individuals, both Native and Settlers and the government would stop providing the Natives with resources. Because they no longer had massive plains to roam nomadically, the Indians were to be forced to abandon that part of their Indigenous lifestyle. The Natives were also told that they could become US Citizens if they agreed to abandon their tribes. This was yet another way the Government tried to deconstruct Native culture, by taking their land and forcing a naturally mobile people to become sedentary. The image is of an advertisement for the land which was being taken and sold.
