Description:

In 712, Arab General Qutayba ibn Muslim conquered Samarkand, resulting in the loss of much of the city's religious pluralism. Nonetheless, it remained a wealthy city with a thriving and diverse market culture, except with a now increasingly Islamic populace as Muslims were offered tax breaks. Many of those who did not like the new Arab regime immigrated to bustling Chinese cities such as Chang'an, the capital of the Tang Dynasty.
