jan 2, 1935 - Audio Compression

Description:

Compression is an audio signal process that reduces the volume of very loud sounds or amplifies quieter sounds, so, reducing or compressing an audio signals ‘Dynamic range’. Downward compression reduces the louder sounds over a given level while quiet sounds remain unaffected. Upward compression increases the loudness of sounds below a given level but leaves louder sound unaffected. Both of these reduce the dynamic range of an audio signal. Originally, in the 30s and 40s compression was used for radio broadcasting to even up signals- but it was then found to also be useful in music.
