jan 1, 1920 - Lincoln Memorial
Description:
Designed by Henry Bacon & carved by the Piccirilli brothers, the Lincoln Memorial was made to commemorate the late president Abraham Lincoln. The site it was built on caused controversy, as Joseph Cannon, a speaker of the House of Representatives did not want the memorial to be built in a "godamned swamp". But since the construction of this memorial, it has gained the importance as a symbol of race relations throughout the United States.
