The Treaty of Versailles was signed on this day, exactly 5 years after Franz Ferdinand was assassinated. The treaty officially brought to an end the war between Germany and the Allies. Out of the many articles of this treaty one of the most important was known as the War Guilt clause. It stated that Germany must accept the responsibility of Germany and her allies for causing all the loss and damage. This included giving up territory and paying huge financial reparations. The total cost of these reparations came out to about 132 billion German marks. Converted to USD and adjusted for inflation this amount translates to about 442 billion USD. WW1 caused a total of about 40 million deaths. It had a total cost of about $4,792,650,210,549.60 (adjusted for inflation). This marked the end of The Great War. A war so great and terrible that we don't need another one. Just 1 would be plenty. For about 30 years anyways.
