After a long campaign on the Isonzo front both Austro-Hungary and Italy were extremely worn out. Austro-Hungary asked Germany to aid in a counterattack. Germany agreed and they invaded Italy together. The invasion was a total success and the Italian army was soundly defeated with over 300,000 being taken as prisoners
