The 2nd battle of Ypres was fought for control of the strategic Flemish town of Ypres in western Belgium. The First Battle of Ypres had been fought the previous fall. The Second Battle of Ypres was the first mass use by Germany of poison gas on the Western Front. Due to the unexpended assault of poison gas the Allies had to retreat. This battle is considered a slim German victory. With about 80 thousand casualties on the allies and about 30 thousand on the German side
