sep 13, 1914 - 1st Battle of Aisne begins, the start of Trench Warfare, and the start of the Race to the Sea

Description:

After retreating for some time the Germans reached a good defensive position and turned around to fight the incoming French and British forces. They entrenched themselves and prepared for a frontal assault. The Allies did the same. After some back and forth fighting both sides realized a frontal assault was not possible. As a result they both started trying to outflank each other to the north. This period, known as the Race to the Sea, lasted for a few months. Eventually both sides reached the eastern cost near Belgium. And there they were locked in stalemate for some time.
