sep 6, 1914 - Battle of the Marne begins, the culmination of the German invasion of France

Description:

The Battle of the Marne marked the culmination of the German invasion of France and marked the turning point of the war. If Germany won, France would fall. The Germans had some success on the Eastern front of the battle. But miscommunication and poor planning caused a gap to open up between two of the German armies on the western front. The French and the BEF were quick to take advantage of it. This forced the Germans to retreat. While not a devastating loss by any means, with both sides losing about 250 thousand men, the German failure to take Paris and get a quick victory as planned was a devastating loss in the long run. One of the German generals who was present Is reported to have told the Kaiser "Your majesty, we have lost the war." The resolution of this battle also marked the beginning of the 4 year long stalemate of trench warfare
