But a combination of poor reconnaissance, poor planning, and poor weather caused the French Armies to be split and unaware of the massive German armies awaiting them. The French attacked entrenched Germans during heavy rain and fog and with no artillery support. The following morning the Germans counterattacked and routed the French.
