may 10, 1773 - The Tea Act

Description:

With the repeal of the Townshend Acts, the Tea Act served to give the failing East India Company a monopoly on tea importation in North America, and was a symbolic tax on the uncooperative colonies. The colonists hated the symbolic nature of the tax and citizens from all major ports and threatened to prohibit ships carrying tea from entering, and protested and boycotted. The issue blew up with the occurrence of the Boston Tea Party, where many Americans threw large tea products into the sea. Colonists believed that this was still taxation without representation even if it was cheaper.
