mar 22, 1765 - The Stamp Act

Description:

The Stamp Act was the first direct taxation on the colonies and required taxation on all printed materials; it was meant to cover the costs of defense near the Appalachians. Though such policies were common in the British Empire, they weren’t common in the colonies and caused rage and resentment within the colonies once they heard of the impending Stamp Act. Colonists responded by protesting and rioting before the act took place, with the most vocal resistance taking place in Boston. Colonies began drafting official protests and resolutions.Once the Stamp Act was put in action, merchants and shopkeepers were the most affected by the act. They reacted by forming societies that organized petitions and boycotts. Many colonial businesses and government offices shut down to protest the law.
