may 3, 1765 - The Quartering Act

Description:

The Quartering Act required colonists to aid British soldiers in return for the soldiers’ protection. This included having to feed, shelter, and provide for the soldiers when needed, though the laws didn’t require that Americans had to maintain British troops in their own private homes. It was a heavy burden for colonists. The British government felt as if the colonists should pay their share of costs of the national debt from the French and Indian War. Colonists felt as it was an indirect form of taxation that the colonists had no voice in, another form of taxation without representation. They reacted to this by protesting in assemblies, though there wasn’t opposition like seen with The Stamp Act.
