When the Second Virginia Convention was convened on March 20, 1774 at Richmond, a delegate named Patrick Henry proposed ideas of raising a military, essentially beginning to actually prepare for revolt. He was however met with resistance, as many wanted to wait to see if Britain would provide any rescinding of the acts. So Patrick Henry postulated a volunteer army, and gave a speech to back it. He closed with the famous words “give me liberty, or give me death!” when addressing the president of the Convention, Peyton Randolph. This was significant because not only did it represent further steps towards the actual war, but also served to further ignite the all important revolutionary spirit of the colonists.
