Description:

This was an act passed by the British Parliament as part of an effort to raise revenue to combat the immense debt taken on by the French & Indian War. This act was half of the previous duty on molasses from the Molasses Act of 1733, and was due to be enforced more than the aforementioned act, and thus the British hoped to collect more. Furthermore, new prime minister George Grenville was under pressure to find a way to remedy the debt, as after the war it was decided a standing army would be funded for the colonies. So in 1764, the act was passed in Parliament. The passing of this act further salted the open wound of colonial taxation, leaving many feeling they were being taxed for something they had never asked for, a.k.a. the war.
