jul 12, 1790 - Civil Constitution of the Clergy
Description:
The Civil Constitution of the Clergy gave people the freedom of worship and abolished the privileges of the Catholic Church. The Clergy was placed under state control and had to swear allegiance to the French state, not to the Pope. The Pope condemned this but it did not matter to the National Assembly, who created the constitution. This marked the end of the Catholic Church's rule in France.
