oct 5, 1789 - The March of Versailles
Description:
The March of Versailles started with nearly 7000 people, mostly women, marched to Versailles in anger over the cost and scarcity of bread. Upon arriving the women demanded the Queen come out and address them. The Queen ignored them and would not come out, this angered the crowd and stormed into the palace. In the palace the mob of women searched for the Queen, who barley escaped into the Kings rooms. Two guards did not escape and their heads were put on spikes. Eventually after much demand the Queen and King came out to address the crowd, who forced the royalty to come back to Paris where they could not leave and were essentially prisoners of the commoners.
