jan 1, 1990 - 1990s: Nonstick coatings begin to be applied to the bottoms of irons.

Description:

By this time, many of the improvements to be made to irons were done, and some basic features, like plastic bodies and cord holders, were added for convenience of the user. Nonstick coatings in particular made ironing smooth, using a slippery substance called polytetrafluoroethylene, or Teflon, that made the running of the iron itself effortless, and also simplified cleaning of the base plate. This addition, along with aluminum bases, colourful plastic assemblies, thermostats, multiple settings and steam holes, auto shutoff, and cable binders are now standard on almost all modern irons.
