Remak was born July 26, 1815, in Posen, Prussia. He studied at the University of Berlin where he earned his medical degree. Remak was Jewish and was barred from teaching. As he was denied by the Friedrich Wilhelm IV to teach he began to focus on lab work. He became very respected and became the first Jewish man to teach at the University of Berlin.
Remak discovered the three layers on the embryo the ectoderm, mesoderm, and the endoderm. He also discovered nonmedullated nerve fibers and nerve cells in the heart.
