Doc Schultz managed to get 45 men on his side in a stone house with some of the men's wives and prepared to wait out Louis Riel. However, Louis had a cannon and was about to kill them all, when a man named Bannatyne went into the house and negotiated their terms of surrender (Page 28) and brought them to Riel. However, Riel looked at them, and then ripped it up. He announced "That their lives will be spared if they surrender now."
