jun 26, 2018 - Information breach costs more than 1 billion in Orange Cameroon

Description:

APA-Yaounde (Cameroon) - A leak of a “USSD code”, which allows customers to recharge their internet plans (“data”), occurred on the network of Orange Cameroon operator during the night of Sunday to Monday, allowing dozens of customers to purchase their supplies without a price and causing a loss of more than 1 billion FCFA, learned APA Wednesday from sources close to the file.

This information, which had already leaked in some of the media on Tuesday evening, has still not been confirmed or refuted by the telecommunications operator.

At a certain time, explained to APA a top Orange executive under the seal of anonymity, it appears that several subscriber have received a code in the form of an anonymous message, simply asking them to copy it, paste it and transfer it in order to have free access to the platform.

Surprised by this bargain, many have repercuted the information in their networks of relatives, friends and acquaintances who have often been able to recharge their internet plan for free in increments of 25,000 CFA francs.

It was learned that it took long hours before the operator's technical services, which still hesitated between piracy and malfunction, discovered the saignee for which an internal investigation was opened.
