Cameroon's Telecommunications Regulatory Board (Agence de Regulation des Telecommunications – ART) has confirmed that cellco MTN Cameroon signed amendments to its existing concession renewal agreement with the government on 5 May, adding comprehensive network coverage and service obligations. The agreement followed a similar concession amendment agreed by rival operator Orange Cameroon and the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications on 9 April. As reported by Agence Ecofin, the ART stated: 'The content of the optimal coverage obligations now specifies the objectives to be achieved for certain localities, major economic zones, road and rail routes, university zones, as well as the timetable for the effective provision of 2G, 3G and 4G services', adding that the signing of the amendments will facilitate the allocation of frequencies in the 700MHz and 800MHz bands to MTN and Orange.


TeleGeography's CommsUpdate reported last month that Orange's concession amendments also included the introduction of service neutrality for the use of mobile frequencies whilst also permitting deployment of fibre-optic networks (although not including retail fixed broadband access).
