jan 1, 1874 - Year 1874:
Earliest fueled irons that run on
gas or other propellants, like oil
or alcohol, are patented.
Description:
The general delivery of gas to American and European homes in the late 1800s brought about the next revolution in the ironing business - the fueled iron. Heated by a gas burner in the iron, these devices were connected to the local gas line, allowing them to continually run without being reheated. This, along with the fact that they were considerably lighter than their forebears, made them popular with the people, and completely shifted ironing technology into a different realm.
