sep 17, 1862 - The Battle of Antietam

Description:

The Battle of Antietam, which occurred on September 17, 1862, is considered one of the most important battles of the Civil War. It was fought in Maryland after two Union soldiers uncovered a copy of General Lee’s battle plans wrapped around a packet of cigars, and ended up as the bloodiest single day battle in U.S history. The battle ended Confederate General Robert E. Lee’s first invasion of the North, along with lifting Union morale. It can also be noted as a turning point in the war, as it helped keep Britain and France out of the conflict, and finally provided President Abraham Lincoln with the opportunity to announce the Emancipation Proclamation. In the long term, it helped ensure Union victory, kept Republican power in Congress.
