apr 25, 1846 - Mexican-American War
Description:
The Mexican-American War took place between 1846 and 1848, starting over the Texas border dispute, and ending with an American victory and what is known as the Mexican Cession. Americans began settling in Texas around two decades prior in the 1820’s, and Texas officially declared itself independent from Mexico in 1836.In the victory the Union increased in size by ⅓ and completed its Manifest Destiny of occupying the land coast to coast. However, as the issue of slavery emerged shortly after the War, as the government began to debate over the newly aquired western territory. If not for the War, documents such as the Wilmot Proviso, the Compromise of 1850, The Kansas-Nebraska Act, and the emergence of the Republican and Free-Soil Parties would not exist, as tensions between North and South would most likely not have escalated in the manner they did during this time. The Mexican-American War was a turning point in that is introduced many new ideas, and spread both slavery and the Abolitionist movement out West.
