aug 21, 1831 - Nat Turner’s Rebellion
Description:
Nat Turner’s Slave Rebellion occurred in August of 1831, and resulted in the death of over fifty slaves accused of participating in the event, including Turner himself, who believed he was chosen by God to violently free himself and other slaves from bondage by bearing arms and murdering whites. Following the event, Turner hid for several weeks until he was discovered and hanged at Jerusalem, Virginia with some of his followers. And, though the goal of the event was to gain freedom and advocate progress towards abolition, the short term reaction from Southerners was the exact opposite. Stricter legislation was passed that fortified pro-slavery beliefs in the South, and frightened Southerners began to adress the issue of slavery as a “postivie good” as opposed to a “necessary evil.”which would extend in the long term to the Civil War, in which the tensions between free-soilers and slave-holders in the region would reach their peak.
