jun 18, 1812 - War of 1812

Description:

The War of 1812 saw America and Great Britain in combat with each other again for the first time since the Revolutionary War, mostly due to the British Navy continuing to interfere with American ships meaning to trade with both England and France who were at the time, also at war with each other. America hoped to put an end to the impressment of American sailors, claim Florida from Spain, one of England's allies, and seize English land in Canada, as well as ending tensions leftover from the Revolution once and for all. However, Congress split over the issue, as Federalists who supported peace with England were opposed to the war. Before the Treaty of Ghent was signed in 1814, the British burned down the White House, and a strong sense of nationalism emerged as a result. And, though no direct and immediate boundary changes occurred as an aftermath of the war, America established itself as a lasting country in the midst of European powerhouse nations, as the growth of industry was encouraged and the creation of a strong military began.
