jun 7, 1628 - Petition of Rights

Description:

The Petitions of Rights is a constitutional document that limited non-Parliamentary taxation, imprisonment without cause and evidence, and enforcement of martial law. This document was passed after conflicts arose between King Charles I and the Parliament over the executions of the Thirty Year War prisoners, new taxation that was not approved by the Parliament, and the imprisonment of those who refused to pay the taxes. The Petition of Rights took even more power from the monarch, who may one day abuse his rights and power, and gave them to the Parliament, which contained a house of elected officials. The Petition is considered one of the most prestigious constitutional document, especially in terms of the validity of taxation, and is the foundation for the Third, Fifth, Sixth, and Seventh Amendments of the US Constitution.
