Description:

In July, Jack Wilson arrived in Blaine Lake as a member of the RNWMP. John was welcomed by the Patterson family who lived next door to the barn where his horse was stabled. During the summer, John and Jessie met. Jessie was a "willowy sixteen-year-old with a lovely high-cheekbones face and thick brown hair". They spent most of the summer together, while he kept his family at home a secret. He gradually stops sending letters home, and he convinces himself he did all he could to get back home. Eventually John and Jessie catch feelings for each other: "His feelings for her - their feelings for each other - were becoming serious".

This is significant because this is the reason John completely abandons his family back home. He found a reason to stay in Canada.
