5h 7min, may 2, 1885 y - Battle at Cut Knife Hill
Description:
Settlers of Battleford were greeted by troops on April 24, 1885, and left the settlement. Lieutenant-Colonel William Otter's troops were eager for military action, despite being even orders to stay in Battleford, Otter ordered the 325 troops in an attack on Chief Poundmaker's camp. The First Nations used a hand mirror to direct their men to attack Otter's troops from all sides. The government's guns quickly broke down and Otter's troops became targets in an open field. Otter's men retreated.
A week after the battle, Metis was defeated at the Battle of Batoche. By July 2nd both Chief Big Bear and Poundmaker were both in police custody. They were tried and found guilty and sentenced to prison. Within 3 years they both had died of illnesses they caught in jail.
