apr 12, 1863 - Attack on Fort Sumter

Description:

Fort Sumter (coastal garrison) is most famous for being the site of the first shots of the Civil War. Confederate General P.G.T. Beauregard bombarded Fort Sumter and after a 34-hour battle, Major Robert Anderson and 86 soldiers surrendered the fort on April 13. Confederate troops would then occupy Fort Sumter for nearly four years. After the Civil War, Fort Sumter was restored by the U.S. military and manned during the Spanish-American War, World War I and World War II.
