With much of shopping moving to the internet, the number and success of online stores such as Amazon began to rise massively, while heavily damaging traditional retail stores. Realizing that they could not compete, many retail stores like Walmart established a heavy online presence, those stores that don't have such a presence, like Macy's or JCPenny have lost much of their former peak profits, and have had to close many of their stores.
