mar 12, 1576 - The Theatre

Description:

The second purpose-built theatre called ‘The Theatre’, was built in 1576 by James Burbage, with help in its design from the scholar and architect, Dr John Dee who, as an expert on ancient Greece and Rome, advised on its Coliseum-like design. In the following year another theatre, ‘The Curtain’, opened close by. These were outdoor amphitheatres based on inn courtyards or animal baiting rings both of which had surrounding galleries. At these theatres the stage jutted into a yard where people stood while others sat in galleries around the outside.
