aug 8, 1588 - Battle of Gravelines
Description:
The day after the fireships were sent, the two fleets engaged at the battle of Gravelines.
The English ships were far more manoeuvrable and had longer range weapons as the Spanish had only anticipated using their ships to support the landing.
There was a lot of damage done to the Spanish fleet and almost none to the English ships.
The ships were scattered and the winds sent them all the way around the British Isles. They had no maps of the waters around Britain; their food and water became polluted and many were slaughtered by the Scots, Irish or bands of English soldiers when they met a shore. Only 65 ships returned to Spain.
