After giving the Japanese one more chance to surrender (26 July 1945), Truman made the decision to use the new weapons against Japan without warning. On August 6, the Enola Gay dropped the first atomic bomb on the city of Hiroshima, resulting in 80,000 instant deaths. Japan refused to surrender, so the U.S. dropped another bomb on the city of Nagasaki two days later, killing another 40,000 Japanese residents instantly.
