may 1, 1960 - U-2 Incident

Description:

On May 1st, 1960, a U-2 spy plane, operated by the CIA, was shot down over the Soviet Union. It’s mission was to do reconnaissance of soviet military bases. It would be shot down near what is now Yekaterinburg, with the pilot being captured. The US would attempt to cover it up, claiming it was a NASA civilian plane, however the Soviet Union would find evidence the plane was a spy plane. This would cause a large diplomatic incident, as the incident occurred only a few weeks before the Big Four summit in Paris, causing the summit to collapse.
