mar 12, 1947 - Truman Doctrine (Speech)

Description:

The British government claimed that they would no longer give assistance to the Greek Government against the Greek Communist party. This announcement sparked Truman’s speech given later asking congress to support the Greek and Turkish governments against the Communists. This was an extremely controversial act but congress immediately had $400 million ready to aid Turkey and Greece. This event was coded blue because although no side “won”, the result favors democracy because the United States was successful aiding Greece and Turkey against communism. President Truman’s speech also led to the formation of NATO which is still in effect today. Additionally, the Truman Doctrine helped establish America’s foreign policy.
