jan 27, 1967 - Apollo 1 disaster

Description:

On January 27, 1967, a flash fire occurred during a launch pad test, preparing for the first human launch to the moon. The cause was pure oxygen in the ship, which was highly flammable. This killed Gus Grissom, Edward White, and Roger Chaffee. It is marked purple because, while it was an important event in the Space Race (and therefore the Cold War), it did not advance the causes of capitalism or communism.
