oct 4, 1957 - Launch of Sputnik
Description:
On October 4, 1957, at 10:29 p.m. Moscow time, Sputnik (translated to “satellite”) was launched into space. It transmitted radio signals back to Earth. Americans feared the USSR could drop a nuclear weapon from space with virtually no way to detect it. The launch of Sputnik was the beginning of the Space Race. This is coded red because the Soviets got a head start on creating extraterrestrial technology.
