aug 19, 1963 - Forrest Gump

Description:

Summary: Forrest Gump isn't a bright man but he is has good intentions. Story revolves around his life and how he became famous and got involved in many historical events during the 50's- 70's. Because of his lack of intelligence, he is often bullied and treated as an outcast.

Racism: One event that Gump was involved in was the Stand In The Schoolhouse Door. This was when the Alabama Governor stood in the door at the University of Alabama to prevent two black students from entering (June 11, 1963). In the movie, angry white folks gathered around and yelled hateful things at the blacks students as they entered the school. One of them dropped a notebook and Forrest picked it up and returned it. This kind act caused the football coach to get mad at him. When Forrest went to Washington D.C., he had an encounter with the Black Panther party. Forrest is actually named after his ancestor, Nathan Bedford Forrest, who was one of the initial members of the KKK. Another racist incident was when Forrest first got on the bus to go to Vietnam and no one was sitting next to Bubba, the only black soldier. Forrest and Bubba instantly became friends because they were both outcasts.
