may 6, 1971 - Remember The Titans

Description:

Summary: True story of two segregated schools in 1971 Virginia integrate to form T.C. Williams High School. The black school's coach is hired as the head coach of this new school over the successful white coach, which causes outrage among the white families. Film focuses around the school football team and their transition into accepting each other and creating this dominant team.

Racism: Brown V Board of Education happened in 1954 which desegregated public schools in America. This film is set in 1971 and still shows the outrage that is caused from this act of integrated schools. This film shows us some of the everyday struggles that blacks faced during this time. Denzel Washington's character gets a brick thrown through his window. The team is thrown out of a white-only restaurant. When school starts, their are protests and outside the school where they verbally attack the black students. During a game, a referee unfairly called flags against their team. Another coach made a racial statement, calling Denzel's character a monkey who eats bananas. While at first the team started out racist and divided, they learned to accept each other and work as a team. Their success leads to the town also accepting and praising them.

Quote: "People say that it can't work, black and white. Here, we make it work every day. We still have our disagreements, of course, but before we reach for hate, always, always, we remember the Titans." - older Sheryl
