jun 14, 1900 - 2nd Naval law
Description:
The second naval law essentially doubled the size of the German navy and was in partial response to tensions regarding the second Boer War.
Having become the second largest naval power, this threatened British naval dominance and lead to a naval arms race between the two countries.
This saw the Reichstag pass 3 amendments in 1906,1908 and 1912 and in Britain the navy grew and diplomatic alliances with France and Russia were made in order to combat the threat posed by Germany.
The Naval Laws pleased the Kaiser and his vision of an empire from Germany's colonies, increased patriotism in Germans and had good support from the Reichstag.
The cost of the naval expansion caused massive national debt for Germany and because of this taxes increased which meant that the trade unions were unhappy.
