to damage the Nicaraguan economy
Description:
The CIA laid mines in Nicaraguan to destabilize the countries economy and discourage other countries from engaging in trade with the Sandinista communist government. However, the mines damaged several foreign ships. The World court attempted to scold the United States for its actions but all efforts to open an investigation and punish the US were ignored by the United States. This event was one of the first significant actions of foreign intervention by the Reagan administration to suppress the spread of communism.
