Born in England, Ruse is an atheist that defends the position that a Christian can accept and believe in the theory of evolution. He is known for his work in philosophy of biology, and, as stated before, concentrates in evolution. Ruse established a now peer-reviewed journal in 1986 named "Biology and Philosophy." Ruse is know for his tolerance of others' points of view until it comes into conflict with a specific subject matter that is currently being taught. An example that he gives is that he does not stay overly concerned with the Christian Science theology until the possibility of teaching that as a foundation in medical school arises. I would expect that he would want the soon-to-be doctors aware of what the Christian Science faith stands for, but not use it in treatment recommendations for his patients.
Ruse taught at University of Guelph for 35 years and then began teaching at Florida State University once he finished his time at University of Guelph. He seems to stay in constant debate with those that support a theory of intelligent design, though he believes that they have the right to believe that theory.
When you look at Ruse's publications, you see that Darwin is mentioned in some way, shape or form in the title. This is obvious that his specialty is in this field, but Ruse admits that his views are constantly influenced by the most recent research and information available. He values the information that is available now that wasn't a few decades ago.
